Rand Exchange Rate History

The Rand was introduced on 14 February 1961. One Dollar exchange rate was 0.71 Rand until 1971. It was a fixed exchange rate. In 1982 the US Dollar became stronger than Rand. High inflation and sanctions placed against South Africa due to the apartheid system had started to depreciate its value. The currency broke above parity with the dollar.

In 1985, it was trading at over 2 Rands per Dollar, up to 2.40 per dollar. By the end of 1989 the rand was trading in the range between 2.0 and 2.5 per dollar.

In the 1990s new economic reforms were started, uncertainty about the future pushed the Dollar rate above 3 Rands, then slide to over 6 per Dollar.

In 2001 the Rand was depreciated to 13.0 per Dollar by the end of 2001. However, by the end of 2002, the currency was recovered to under 9 Rands. By the end of 2004 was trading under R 5.70 to the dollar. In mid-00s the currency was trading around 6 to the dollar.

A stalled SA's mining industry in 2012 led to new lows. In 2015, the rand had weakened to 15 per Dollar. In the period of 2016-2019 the exchange rate was traded in the range of 12-16 Rand per 1 Dollar. In 2020 the Dollar moved higher.
